The gum of the guggul tree is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine. This gum is a yellowing resinous substance that is obtained from the stem of the guggul plant. The guggul plant is very well established in Ayurveda. Even in Sushruta Samhita, one of the most detailed works on Ayurvedic medicine, the virtues of the guggul in the treatment of obesity and rheumatism are recorded. Guggul is commercially available for the treatment of cholesterol and triglyceride deposits in the body.

Guggul is a traditional ayurvedic herb that has been extensively used by ayurvedic practitioners. It is used both as a single herb medicine and in combinations. It is very commonly used in making ayurvedic pills as it has a sticky texture that helps in binding the other ingredients. Some of the most famous Guggul preparations are arogyavardhni vati, Chandraprabha vati, triphala Guggul and many more.

It can also lower total cholesterol by 14-27%, triglycerides by 22-30%, and increase HDL cholesterol by approximately 20%. Another study found that the steroid guggulsterone, the active agent in the extract, blocks the activity of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) on cells.FXR helps regulate cholesterol by affecting bile acids, which are produced from cholesterol and released by the liver.

The benefits of red yeast rice are attracting attention today largely because of its effectiveness in safely lowering cholesterol. It's effectiveness for this purpose is backed by numerous reliable research studies as well as centuries of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine.Myrrh adds an earthy component to many mixtures of incense. It's used as an additive in wines, toothpastes, lotions, and perfumes. The raw essential oil of myrrh, however, is often described as sharp and bitter.
