Hypoallergenic Diet

By Keelin Orla at 2010-08-05 02:30:27
Nutritional therapist agree that an eating plan consisting of fresh food which in unrefined and lightly cooked which helps to preserve the maximum amount of nutrients is best for all round health. However on your first consultation you maybe prescribed a Hypoallergenic Diet as a diagnostic tool to be used for the first two weeks of a nutritional therapy regime.

A canine can have an onset of allergies anywhere from a few months old to up to twelve years old. There are certain ingredients that dogs are more commonly allergic to than others. These seven ingredients include: beef, milk, eggs, chicken, soy, wheat, and corn. If you want to go strictly by statistics, beef and soy are the two at the top of the dog allergy list. If a dog is found to allergic to one of these ingredients, they will often times be allergic to one or more of the other ingredients as well.

Regardless of the actual type of adverse food reaction, the signs that you will see are generally the same. Dogs with food allergies often have non-seasonal itchiness, sometimes accompanied by gastrointestinal problems. This itchiness can vary in severity from the occasional scratch to a maddening itch that leads to self trauma and infection.

Previously only available through a veterinarian, hypoallergenic dog food can now be obtained through a variety of convenient sources. Pet specialty stores, like Pets Mart and Petco, some grocery stores, and even online retailers sell hypoallergenic formulas. The increase in availability, and the expanded variety of food choices, is a result of people being more aware that their dog can have food allergies, just like a person. Overwhelming consumer demand for hypoallergenic dog food has made many of the big name brands in dog food create hypoallergenic dog food formulas.

Whenever your dog shows new behaviors such as obsessive scratching and licking or digging at their ears, pay attention! This type of behavior change is often indicative that your dog is under some form of stress and is very uncomfortable; commonly the source of the stress is an allergy. Just like people, dogs can "grow into" an allergy by becoming sensitized to an allergen over time. Just because your Goldendoodle puppy does not have an allergy now does not necessarily mean they will live their entire life allergy free. Always be in tune to your dogs behavior so that if it changes, you will notice it sooner rather than later.

Food allergies are common problems in both humans and dogs and are essentially caused by the body's inability to process some types of proteins. It is common knowledge that the commercial food for dogs available all over the market contains chemicals, preservatives, flavorings and colorings that can be extremely dangerous and allergic for dogs.

Meats can also be an issue. The more common the meat is and the higher your dog's level of exposure, the more likely he or she is to have an allergy to it. Beef and chicken are the most common animal sources for dog allergies, because they're found in so many foods. Hypoallergenic dog foods are more likely to substitute lamb instead. That way, your dog can avoid the problem meats.
