Groin Pain in Pregnancy

Groin pain is a kind of muscular spasm which can be experienced in one side or in either sides. The basic reason for the pain is that the uterus, which is responsible for holding the baby, stretches in order to make sufficient space for the fetus to grow. This stretches the muscles and the ligaments to expand. Therefore, this expansion may lead to a severe pain in the groin.

Later on in your pregnancy, around the middle to end of the second trimester and into the third trimester you may feel a different kind of pain through the lower abdominal area, the pelvis and the groin. This pain can be a lot more severe and feel like shooting pains across your belly and into your groin.

Women are now more than ever looking for drug free approaches to tacking the aches and pains of pregnancy. A chiropractor will check and maintain the pelvis and spine to help to prepare a woman for the delivery of her baby and help to relieve back ache, sciatica leg, hip and groin pain experienced during pregnancy.

When it comes to dealing with abdominal, pelvic or ovary pain, it's extremely important you know which one is causing the discomfort. These areas are within the same region, so it might take a doctor's opinion to figure out what's causing the pain. Some abdominal pain is normal, however, if you're experiencing abdominal pain as well as cramping, this could be a sign of something more severe and medical attention should be sought after immediately.

During pregnancy, your body produces a veritable cocktail of hormones. Among these is a hormone called relaxin. The primary role of relaxin is to loosen the joints and ligaments in your body in order to help them stretch and widen. This allows your body to more easily make room for your baby inside of your pelvis. And, when the time comes for your baby to be born, the hormone relaxin will have helped the joints of your pelvis relax and stretch enough for your baby's shoulders to pass through your pelvic bones.

Sudden movements such as coughing, sneezing or laughing activate these muscles and can be painful. Changing positions too quickly can also result in these sharp, shooting pains. This type of pain frequently occurs in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. If you are suffering with round ligament pain, you may be able to get relief by bringing your knees up toward your chest. This will take some of the strain off of your over-stretched and spasming ligaments. If that does not provide relief, try lying on the side opposite the pain.

Hormonal changes in a woman's body are an important backache cause. The increase in pregnancy hormones lead to softening of the ligaments to facilitate childbirth (as the birth canal has to expand and increase in elasticity to provide passage for the baby). The growing fetus also puts strain on the soft abdominal ligaments leading to backache.
