An effective technique for reducing tension headaches is to tighten muscles in the head, neck, and jaw for five to ten seconds, and then release them. You may find that you will be able to achieve a deeper level of relaxation from this simple exercise. This exercise will helps to make the muscles more flexible to tension cause by stress and exhaustion and hence reduce pain.

When you slouch, slump your shoulders and jut your head forward for long periods of time it will cause stress on the postural muscles and overload them. Over time this tension causes the muscles spasms I described earlier. If this poor posture occurs day after day without correction the stress on the muscles accumulates and eventually manifests into tension headaches.

One of the most disruptive stress-related ailments can be a tension headache. While it is not always easy to get rid of this type of headache, due to the possibility that there may be many causes, there are things you can do to decrease the discomfort of a tension headache.

There are two types of tension headaches. One is chronic and the other one is episodic. A chronic tension headache symptom varies slightly from the episodic headache symptoms. When it lasts for a short period of time then it is known as episodic but if it lasts for a longer period and occurs frequently then it is called as chronic tension headache in medical terms.

Nowadays tension headaches are seen among the adults including both women and men. But it is considered to be more common among the women gender. Sometimes tension headache is confused with the symptoms for migraine which can also lead to wrong treatment.

The tension headache attack is usually more gradual than migraine headache and the duration of the pain may range from hours to even years. Sometimes, a migraine headache may even evolve into a tension headache, as both conditions are quite similar and are cause by similar influence such as stress. More often, a sufferer will feel pain almost every day without a break, although the intensity may vary. Tension headaches rarely begin during childhood or adolescence but more commonly during middle age. They are more common in women than men.

Typically called mild, this pain can and does vary in intensity. The exact causes still cannot be proven scientifically, and tension headaches symptoms can be brought on by any number of things. Stressful emotional and physical circumstances, it is believed, can bring on a tension headache. When a patient is put into a really rough circumstance either physically or emotionally, violá a tension headache will appear, quickly. Generally beginning as a tight sensation in the skull, it turns into excruciating pain later on.
