Wheat Germ Recipes

Lightly spray bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Combine crust ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with electric mixer on low speed until well blended. Mixture will be crumbly. Press crumbs firmly onto bottom of pan. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.

To make filling, combine Splenda and sugar well in a large bowl. Add flour and baking powder and mix well. Add eggs and blend well. Gently stir in lemon juice and peel. Carefully pour over the hot crust. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until the edges are a light golden brown and the filling is set. Cool completely. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cut into squares.

The stuff is the bran and the wheat germ part of the grain. White bread is the endosperm part of the grain. The white bread has more calories and a higher insulin response, but does not have much nutrition. The brown whole grain bread has the nutritious bran (fiber) and wheat germ still in it. The fiber lowers the insulin response making it less fattening and less likely to cause diabetes. The fiber also adds bulk to the diet making the food more satisfying with fewer calories.

If you buy your pasta from a grocery store, consider buying whole wheat pastas like Barilla Whole Grain or Ronzoni Healthy Harvest. The taste is almost identical to the pasta you're already used to, if not more earthy and more flavorful. All it takes is choosing a different box of pasta - it's no more money out of your budget, no sacrifice in taste, just a whole lot of nutrients!

Mighty Muffins
(Power foods: 3)
1 egg
1 pound lean ground beef
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup minced onion
Salt and pepper to taste

In a large bowl, whisk egg and add everything else, mixing it with your hand until well blended. Divide mixture evenly into a 6-cup nonstick muffin pan. Preheat the oven to 375 F and bake for 25 minutes.

For preparation you need a quarter teaspoonful of salt, 2 cups of general flour, quarter tablespoon baking soda, 2 tablespoonful baking powder, one tablespoonful ground cinnamon, quarter teaspoonful ground nutmeg, two third cup of toasted wheat germ, a cup of chopped apple, one third cup of margarine, half cup of skimmed milk, and one fourth cup of hone. For the topping you require one tablespoonful toasted wheat germ, quarter teaspoonful ground cinnamon, and one tablespoonful sugar.
