Anxiety disorders, if untreated, often lead to depression. Anxiety attacks can happen at any time, anywhere and are categorized as a sudden attack of fear and can also be a combination of both fear and apprehension.Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder are caused by an imbalance of a natural brain chemical known as serotonin. Too much of this chemical is one of the major causes of generalized anxiety disorder.

GAD sufferers have unrelenting worry and anxiety. Everybody worries about things everyday, but GAD victims take it to another level completely. Everyday things, issues and events, that most folks handle without obsessively worrying about them, become major issues for someone with general anxiety disorder. They constantly worry about things, the seriousness of which is way out of proportion to their reaction to them.

Treatment for general anxiety disorders include anti-anxiety drugs or antidepressants that control the psychological symptoms while there are some beta blockers that control physical symptoms. Antidepressants include drugs such as Prozac and Lexapro. Other drugs that are used in the treatment of general anxiety disorders include Valium, Ativan, and Xanax. These are given only for short term symptom relief since they have severe side effects such as drowsiness, loss of memory, poor muscle coordination and more.

Most folks experience feelings of anxiety before an important event, like an important exam, business presentation, or their first date. Anxiety disorders can be a sickness that disempower a person's live with overwhelming anxiety and concern that are chronic and unremitting, and that may grow progressively worse.People describe the generalized anxiety like a knot in the stomach accompanied by recurring fearful thoughts. This condition is referred to as Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD. This generalized anxiety disorder is the breeding ground for future panic attacks, and it is important that it be addressed and eliminated so the individual can go about daily business unimpeded by the uncomfortable stress sensations.

Science has not yet completely understood the precise things that cause this generalized anxiety disorder. Some common factors have been documented which have a major role in this disorder. They are: brain chemistry, genetic predisposition and outside traumatic stimuli such as death of a loved one causing natural anxiety. When normal tensions and fears grow to such an extent that they dominate the life and render a person unable to function normally, the person is said to be affected by generalized anxiety disorder.

The thoughts that perpetuate the worry aren't usually life threatening. If you were in physical danger, your emotional and physical reactions would be more precisely described as fear. Fear and anxiety are related emotions, but anxiety more accurately describes a situation where the cause of concern isn't imminent. Every one of us struggles with normal anxiety from time to time, such as worrying about an exam or work project. However a person with GAD worries excessively almost every day and, typically, the worrisome concerns jump from one cause of discontent to the next, making them uncontrollable, time consuming, and very distracting. By and large GAD is an intolerable and painful disorder.

Many anxiety sufferers seek the assistance of professionals that are trained in psychotherapy. This form of therapy works to identify stressors in the life of the person seeking anxiety relief, and assists in bringing about behavioral changes in order to better cope with situations that the mind and body perceives as a "danger". Many find this to be a successful means of overcoming anxiety.
